The physician accepted, and - after learning the secrets tied to royal blood and swearing a similar oath - ascended to the throne. How dare they, after offering the treasure of their land, belittle a woman for doing the same? Their mockery, their derogatory underestimation of his talents, angered the physician. Many scoffed at her desperation, at her willingness to destroy the last of her blood ties to the throne, just to keep a mere physician - no matter his ability - under her control. Thus, she offered the physician what no other kingdom had - and what no other kingdom dared - to offer: the throne. Now this Queen was wealthy in everything but heirs, and had no children to succeed her. One Queen, hailing from a mythical kingdom, saw past the prideful skin the physician wore. To him, they were nothing but stepping stones for fame and fortune. To them, he was Arachne, his stitch spun like gold threats, weaving through the tapestries that were their bodies. They offered him everything, from land to their first-born daughter, anything to have the physician under their control. Consequently, neighboring allies and enemies alike - though it made no difference to him - sought to claim him, offering treasures and wealth far beyond the payments he’d receive. ![]() Soon, word of his impossible talent spread far and wide until his name was celebrated across the lands. Though many underestimated his hands at first glance, they soon learned to revere them as he stitched skin and tended to head injuries as if they were the common cold. The imminent death of his mentor, though saddened him, ultimately freed him from the dreary town he felt trapped in, allowing him to travel from kingdom to kingdom in search for wealthier clients and cureless cases. Inevitably, as he began to best the physician in his remedies and cures, frustration gnawed at his pride, yearning for challenges to prove his worth to, rather than wasting his talents on these inferior cases of fevers and stomach aches. The boy, confused but eager to impress, agreed.Īs winters and summers passed, he grew sharper, and developed an affinity for the brain, treating afflictions once thought impossible to treat. The physician took a look at this boy - for he was still far too young to be a man, no matter his protesting claims - and his determined gaze, and agreed to take him in, as long as he swore to never inflict harm or hurt on anyone, regardless of their status. The young man, desperate to gain the secrets to cheating death, sought an apprenticeship under an elder physician. Alas, he lost her too, a fateful drowning taking her from his grasp, leaving him with nothing but his hands and the clothes on his back to live with. Not born of legacy nor fame, the young boy had only himself to carry on the family name, and his sister to carry on their blood, their parents long lost to a harsh winter storm.
